VISIT BY THE DANISH PARLIAMENT'S PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE AND AUDITOR GENERAL TO BANGLADESH, 9-12 FEBRUARY 2008
Visit by the Danish Parliament's Public Accounts Committee and the Danish Auditor General to Bangladesh, 9-12 february 2008.
The Public Accounts Committee of Folketinget (the Danish Parliament) and the Danish Auditor General visited Bangladesh on 9-12 February 2008 with the objective to inspect and assess the Danish development assistance to Bangladesh and to hold meetings with the Government of Bangladesh. The visit was a follow-up on the recent report made by the Danish Auditor General on the Danish development assistance to Bangladesh and Bhutan published in January 2008.
The overall conclusion in the report by the Auditor General was that the assistance to Bangladesh and Bhutan in general was satisfactory, and that the programmes in general follow the overall policy of enhanced aid effectiveness. The on-going sector programmes are in general progressing in accordance with targets set for the programmes.
During the stay in Bangladesh the Delegation visited various development programmes in Patuakhali district in the Southern part of the country, private sector projects and held meetings with the Foreign Affairs Adviser, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Auditor General of Bangladesh.
The one and half day visit to Patuakhali district provided the Delegation with first hand impressions of Danish development assistance to urban water supply and sanitation in Patuakhali town, farmers field schools in aquaculture and livestock, rural water supply and sanitation, including for schools, rural roads construction and community-based fisheries management. Denmark has for many years focused a large part of its development assistance in the coastal districts of Bangladesh.
The Delegation also visited two private sector projects supported by the Business-to-Business Programme (B2B), namely Treco/Unitech and Click House. Treco/Unitech makes fine metal products, and Click House is a graphic/desk top publishing company. Both projects are examples of successful twinning arrangements between Bangladeshi and Danish private companies.
A visit was also made to the Under-privileged Children’s Education Programme (UCEP) in Dhaka, which is a national NGO that provides vocational training and employment support services to poor urban working children.
During the meeting with the ACC the delegation praised the Governments efforts of fighting corruption in Bangladesh and acknowledged the important steps taken by the Government to reconstitute the ACC and the Election Commission as well as to establish a human rights commission.
Discussions with the Government of Bangladesh also focused on the importance of working towards restoring democracy in the country and to follow the road map leading up to the general election at the end of 2008.
